Career Tools

Useful Tips

  • Don't wait until your career is in trouble to look at new opportunities. Exploring other jobs is not a criminal offense and it is not grounds for termination unless you are doing it during your work day to the detriment of performing your assigned duties.
  • It is not easy to find a job. It will require time for you to prepare a resume, research companies and recruiters to make contacts and do follow ups. Budget some money for expenses for mailings and long distance calls.
  • Your mentor should be a successful person involved in your chosen industry, a friend, relative or sought out contact may be willing to coach you through your job search.

Natural and Organic Personal Care Industry & Health and Beauty (HABA) Resources

Personal care products are generally used for personal health and hygiene. They include products like body talc, body scrub, tooth paste, tooth brush, tongue cleaner, tooth powder, bathing salts, bathing gel, essential oils, moisturizer, skin creams, face wash, hair oil, hair shampoo, hair conditioner, soap, nail and cuticle care products. In recent years, consumer health awareness has slowly been increasing and this has led people trying to take better care of themselves.

While production of natural personal care products was more of a slow-moving, cottage industry through the 1970s, it quickly evolved in concert with the expansion of natural grocery outlets. That popularity brought government regulation, which started at the state level in Oregon and California. While the USDA (US Food and Drug Administration) will certify products as organic, Food and Drug Administration still has not defined "natural" for personal care and the US Federal Trade Commission has not taken action on marketing using the term. That left the industry to self-regulate. Among the forerunners has been the Natural Products Association which has issued "seal of organic" to many products.

The major personal care products manufacturing nations include France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, United States, Russia and Brazil. The industry has a huge market and the demand for essential products like soaps, shampoos, moisturizers and lotions is the highest. The surge in consumer interest in, and adoption of, natural personal care products around the globe has driven outstanding growth.

The personal care products industry is closely associated with two other industries, the health care industry and the chemical industry thus forming an important part of the value chain. It is also related to the petroleum industry as most of the raw materials used for making personal care products like Propylene Glycol and PVP/VA Copolymer are derived from petroleum products. As these products might contain some toxic elements, research and development is going on to make them less harmful and therefore healthy ingredients like herbal and other natural products are used. Now more and more companies are emphasizing on making products, using organic or herbal compounds instead of synthetic ones.

Jobs and careers in the natural personal care products industry is continuing to grow and expand. If you have the passion and business skills to work in this industry, go for it!
