The Position: Retail Sales Manager

JOB TITLE:  Retail Sales Manager

LOCATION: Burbank, CA. (Southern California)

CLASSIFICATION: Full-time / Exempt

SALARY: Competitive Salary Based on Experience


General Purpose:

·        To supervise and support Retail Sales Associates and Retail Associates in successfully performing their job functions

·        To implement and maintain field sales programs, sales tracking programs, and other division programs as determined by the Business Manager.



Retail Sales Staff Management

·        Manages RSA’s and RA’s according to priorities and focus set by Business Manager.

·        With Business Manager, sets monthly, quarterly, and yearly goals for each RSA and RA and monitors progress toward goals.

·        Implements and maintains sales programs (i.e. FIV, Spiffs) with RSA’s and RA’s.

·        Implements and confirms Ad Planners.

·        Implements, and maintains sales and organizational tools for RSA’s & RA’s.  Helps develop tools as needed.

·        With Business Manager, analyzes RSA Call Report Summaries and formulates action plans.

·        Acts as primary contact and support for RSA’s & RA’s.

·        Rides with each in state RSA for a full business day at least one time per month to critique performance, train and assist rep with challenges in territory (Business Manager to set frequency expectation for out of state Ride A Longs).  RSM writes recaps visits and holds RSA accountable to completing follow up items.

·        Develops RSA’s & RA’s by giving direct feedback, creating and executing developmental plans, and writing and giving Performance Reviews.

·        Writes and gives Counseling Actions as needed and as requested by Business Manager

·        Trains all new RSA’s and RA’s according to company and division standards.

·        Checks in with RSA’s and RA’s at least once per day.

·        Has Ride a Long with at least one vendor per month visiting 3-4 stores per RAL.

·        Has the ability to run Sales Tracking Reports and runs them regularly as needed.

Retailer Account Support

·        Creates new store opening and reset support schedule for RSA’s & RA’s

·        Supports new store openings by setting at least one day, ensuring merchandising is optimal, filling in all voids prior to store opening, providing gift basket giveaway, etc.

·        Supports/Attends resets as needed.

·        Troubleshoots problems regarding vendor product and promotions.

·        Calls on a minimum of 3 retail accounts as directed by Business Manager.

·        In the event that a Territory is without a RSA, calls on the key retailers and handles general business in the territory until a new RSA is hired,

Sales Meetings

·        Assists Business Manager in creating agenda for Sales Meetings and co-leads meetings with Business Manager

·        Schedules and conducts weekly Sales Focus Conference Call

·        Schedules and conducts Monthly Sales Meetings.

Trade Shows and Events

·        Attends Trade Shows, retailer events, and company events as directed by Business Manager.  This may involve out of state travel.


·        Continually communicates with Business Manager regarding competitive feedback, troubled accounts, projects status, etc.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage and motivate a sales team.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully implement and maintain sales programs or the equivalent.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially an ability to listen to client needs
  • Excellent organizational skills

  • 2 years’ minimum managing 3 or more people
  • Demonstrated success in growing sales as sales representative or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3-year sales experience or equivalent
  • Minimum of 1 year of merchandising experience or equivalent
  • Professional or personal experience with the Natural Food Industry preferred

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule to support sales reps and merchandisers in the field
  • Must spend a minimum of 10 working days per month in the field, including a minimum of two working days with each sales rep per month.
  • Must be able to see, hear, speak and write clearly to communicate with employees and/or other customers

  • Must be able to be on feet for 3 hours consecutively, up to 8 hours per day
  • Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends (resets and new store sets)
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must have car/truck, valid driver’s license, and vehicle insurance.
